Death Penalty Around the World
Amnesty International released their annual report today, entitled Death sentences and Executions 2009. (PDF of report) China leads the world, executing more people than the rest of the world combined. The Report notes that “eighteen countries carried out executions in 2009″: Known Executions in 2009 Bangladesh (3), Botswana (1), China (+), Egypt (at least 5), Iran (at least 388), Iraq (at least 120), Japan (7), Libya (at least 4), Malaysia (+), North Korea (+), Saudi Arabia (at least 69), Singapore (1), Sudan (at least 9), Syria (at least 8), Thailand (2), USA (52), Viet Nam (at least 9), Yemen (at least 30). “RNC: Risque National Committee”
The Republican National Committee spent “$17,514 on private aircraft in the month of February alone (as well as $12,691 on limousines during the same period).” But those charges, as noted by the Times were overshadowed by the $1,946.25 charge at Voyeur West Hollywood, which was described by The Los Angeles Times last year as a “high-end nightclub” with an interior “reminiscent of the masked orgy scene” from the movie “Closer.” You can read more about the club in this Daily News article. DOE Is Told School Closings Were Done Improperly
A 9-4 vote by the Panel of Education Policy taken on January 26th to close 19 poorly performing schools was overturned this past Friday in a Manhattan courtroom. State Supreme Court Judge Joan B. Lobis cited multiple violations made by the New York City of Department of Education specifically their failure “to provide the detailed analysis an impact statement mandates.” Judge Lobis was referring to an Educational Impact Statement, a document required by law that assesses how changes of this magnitude will affect the surrounding community. After reviewing the evidence, the judge believed the DOE failed to adequately explain to parents and local advocates how extensive the effect of these closings would be in their respective neighborhoods. A Big F***ing Deal T-Shirt Story
So earlier this week during the signing ceremony for the most historic piece of progressive legislation since 1965, our very own (US) Vice President, Joe Biden – dropped an F bomb explaining how important the day, the bill, the moment – was. It was a half-hour later when I realized this had all happened and saw one of my friends tweet that it should be a T-Shirt. I must have muttered aloud well that’s not hard.
