Let’s Go Win This Thing

In the season finale of West Wing, when the Democratic Nominee for president is finally decided and giving his acceptance speech, Alan Alda’s character, the Republican Nominee Arnie Vinnick, stands up and exclaims “Ok, let’s go win this thing.” We’re certainly not supporting Republican candidates, but the Democratic Nominees for City Comptroller and Public Advocate have finally been decided. John Liu narrowly defeated David Yassky for the NYC Comptroller nomination 56% to 44% and Bill DeBlasio trounced Mark Green for the Public Advocate nomination 63% to 37%. Only about 200k New Yorkers voted in the runoff. So what now? All of these long and hard fought campaigns deserve praise. They contributed to the democratic process by providing options and helped … More >>

Take 2: It’s Runoff Day.

Today is primary runoff day for Democratic candidates who are seeking the offices of public advocate and city controller. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. The candidates for public advocate are Mark Green and City Councilman Bill de Blasio. For controller, the rivals are Councilmen John Liu and David Yassky. If you’re not sure where or how to vote, you can go to the Board of Elections Web site at www.vote.nyc.ny.us and find the poll site locator, or call (866) VOTE-NYC – that’s (866) 868-3692. Sam Hudis, Founder of Hunter College High School YDs, 18

Sam’s Democratic adventure began one night last February, when he was feeling bored and partisan. He clicked on Democrats.org. Which took him to the Young Democrats of America. He learned his high school did not have a chapter. So, he started one. Pretty soon, he’d made MYD’s acquaintance through Scott Murphy’s NY20 campaign. Unlike some of the “older” folks in MYD (read: 25 and up), Sam grew up under the reign of George W. Bush and has little recollection of previous presidents. W was nearly enough to turn a young man off politics for good. Luckily, a certain community organizer from Chicago came along: I was extremely cynical about politics until President Obama won the Iowa Caucus on January 3rd, … More >>

Was Obama-Mania Too Trendy To Last?

Remember LiveStrong bracelets?  You know, those rubber yellow things from 2004?  If you didn’t have one, you were relegated to the class of the horribly-uncool.  Add the bonus of actually being a good cause to the cool factor, and you had a vastly successful charity campaign.  But now, do you ever see someone with a LiveStrong bracelet anymore?  Rarely. Is Obama-mania like a trendy charity? Sure we all had our buttons, lawn-signs (well, not in NYC, but you get my point), posters, t-shirts…the list goes on.  But where are they now?  More importantly, what happened to the intangibles like our thirst for change and motivation to turn America around?  Have they gone the way of the charity-rubber-bracelet trend?  The Times … More >>

Photo of the Week: Back-up Plan

The Empire State Building unveiled its new $12.5 million Art Deco lobby this week, designed by architect Frank Prial. We had originally planned to feature the Building’s display of green Thursday night, for the 70th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz (and much to the delight of Iranian activists opposing Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s visit to our fair city this week). However, the powers that be at ESB lost their nerve, and last night’s color was decidedly red. (Photo by Katie Sokoler/Gothamist)
