Taking Fireside Chats Online
In his first-ever online town hall, President Obama fielded a handful of questions from over 104,000 submitted on the web. Questions focused on the economy, but also touched upon topics particularly relevant for young people, like unaffordable college tuition and burdensome student loans. Obama said too many college students finish school while drowning in debt. He said a public service program will begin in a matter of weeks. “If you come out of college with $50,000 worth of debt it’s then hard for you to start making a decision about wanting to be a teacher or wanting to go into social work,” he said. The Big Ugly
All about the state budget in Albany this week and it’s been dubbed “the big ugly” by legislators. With a $3B+ hole to fill, taxes are going up and services are being cut. Some of what appears to be on the table: – A deal to avoid big fare hikes and cuts in transit service in New York City, a plan the MTA board adopted Wednesday (and has been met with fierce criticism)…that could infuse the debt-riddled public authority with cash. – A “bigger, better bottle bill” that will expand nickel deposits for bottled water to raise revenue (much as is currently done with cans of soda or beer) and encourage recycling. – A $16 million [cut] from the state’s … More >>
